Global Covid-19 Tally Rises To Nearly 2.3 Crore, Death Toll Inches Closer To 8 Lakh Mark; US Case Count Tops 56 Lakh

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has increased to nearly 2.3 crore mark, while the deaths have risen close to 8 lakh, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Saturday (22 August) evening, the total number of cases stood at 2,29,69,090 and the fatalities rose to 7,99,632, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

As many as 1,47,25,753 people have recovered from the disease globally so far.

The US accounted for the world's highest number of infections and fatalities at 56,24,721 and 1,75,416, respectively, according to the CSSE.

Brazil came in the second place with 35,32,330 infections and 113,358 deaths.

In terms of cases, India ranks third (29,75,701), and is followed by Russia (9,49,531), South Africa (6,03,338), Peru (5,67,059), Mexico (5,49,734), Colombia (5,22,138), Chile (3,93,769), Spain (3,86,054), Iran (3,54,764), Argentina (3,29,043), the UK (3,25,263), Saudi Arabia (3,05,186), Pakistan (2,92,174), Bangladesh (2,90,360), France (2,71,960), Italy (2,57,065), Turkey (2,55,723), Germany (2,33,034), Iraq (1,97,085), Philippines (1,87,249), Indonesia (1,51,498), Canada (1,26,319) and Qatar (1,16,481), the CSSE figures showed.

The other countries with over 10,000 deaths are the Mexico (59,610), India (55,794), UK (41,491), Italy (35,427), France (30,508), Spain (28,838), Peru (27,034), Iran (20,376), Colombia (16,568), Russia (16,268), South Africa (12,843) and Chile (10,723).
