A special SIT court on Wednesday (20 March) sentenced Yakub Pataliya - a convict in the Gujarat 2002 Godhra train carnage, to life imprisonment, Press Trust of India has reported.

Pataliya was convicted by the special SIT judge H C Vohra based on submissions by five other accused. He was being tried at the special court set up at Sabarmati Central Jail.

Booked back in 2002 in connection with the attack in which 59 ‘Karsevaks’ were burnt alive, Pataliya was arrested by the Gujarat police in January 2018.

Thirty-one others have also been convicted in the matter out of which 11 have been awarded the death penalty and the rest receiving life imprisonment. The death penalty of all the 11 convicts was converted to life imprisonment by the Gujarat High Court in October 2017.

Eight accused in the matter still continue to evade the law enforcement authorities.
