Government Efforts Pay Off: Namami Gange Named “Public Water Agency Of The Year” At Global Water Summit

NDA government’s flagship programme National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) or Namami Gange was felicitated with the prestigious 'Public Water Agency of the Year' award on 9 April at the Global Water Summit, reports Indian Express.

The Global Water Awards are presented at the Global Water Summit, the major business conference for the water industry worldwide. It is the flagship water industry event of the year.

It attracts high-level executives from industry, municipalities and international water companies on a single platform to discuss some of the pressing issues of the industry.

According to NMCG, which is under the Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, “the awards recognise excellence across the international water industry and reward those initiatives in the water, wastewater, and desalination sectors, which bring remarkable improvements in the lives of people.”

Namami Gange Programme is an Integrated Conservation Mission and was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 with a budget outlay of Rs.20,000 Crore.

It has been tasked to accomplish the twin objectives of effective reduction of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation of National River Ganga.

Serious About Ganga Rejuvenation

Recently Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Ganga Rejuvenation stated that while the previous governments spent less than Rs 4,000 crore on Ganga cleaning programmes between 1985 and 2014, the present NDA government has sanctioned 254 projects for more than Rs 24,000 crore in the last four years.
