India’s inland waterways transportation system is all set to be harnessed in a major way, announced Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Union Budget 2019.

Under this plan, the cargo transportation via the river Ganga is expected to increase by four times in four years. This scheme to use inland waterways to transport goods is expected to de-congest roads and railways.

The multi-modal terminal for waterways transport is set to become operational in Varanasi and two more such terminals would come up in Sahebganj and Haldia by 2020. This move is also expected to reduce the oil import bill of India.
