Pakistan’s new President Arif Alvi’s family is connected to India in more ways than one. His father had been a dentist for former Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, according to the biography written on the website of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf party (PTI).

A close associate of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, Alvi had contested his first election in 1997 and lost. He is also one of the founding members of the party alongside Khan. He served as the secretary general of the party from 2006 to 2013.

His family migrated to Pakistan after the partition, and he was born in Karachi in 1947.

In order to secure the presidency, he contested against People’s Party of Pakistan (PPP’s) Aitzan Ahsan, Pakistan Muslim League (N) nominee Maulana Fazl ur Rehman and went on to become the thirteenth president of the country.

Due to his father’s connections with the Jinnah family, they were gifted a lot of property, which includes the Mohatta Palace in Karachi, according to Manorama.
