Amit Khare the Secretary in the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) - soon to be renamed as the Ministry of Education announced the key points pertaining to the Higher Education reforms which have been planned under the new National Education Policy.

Khare announced that a multiple entry and exit system will be introduced in the higher education system to ensure a student's efforts are not wasted in case he or she needs to drop out of the course for some reason.

The student will thus receive a certificate and diploma for successfully completing one and two year of the degree course respectively.

Students will also be allowed to take a sabbatical from the course via an academic credit bank system and can go for a PhD after completing an additional academic year post their four year degree.

Khare also announced a plan to introduce a multidisciplinary education system wherein students will be able to study minor subjects like music along with their major course.
