BJP's lead strategist in northeastern states and party's senior leader Himanta Biswa Sarma would be the next Chief Minister of Assam as he on Sunday was elected the leader of the BJP legislature party by the newly elected MLAs.

The 52-years-old leader was elected the leader of the BJP legislature party at a meeting held at the Assam assembly campus.

The incumbent Chief Minister (CM) Sarbananda Sonowal has tendered his resignation to state Governor Professor Jagdish Mukhi as state cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to become the new CM of the northeastern state.

The BJP-led NDA alliance gained a comfortable majority in the Assam legislative assembly elections.

Both Sonowal and Sarma travelled to New Delhi to meet party president JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national secretary (organization) BL Santhosh on Saturday. The top leadership of the BJP reportedly held several discussions, both together and separately, with the two leaders from Assam.

Sarma held key portfolios of finance, health and education in the previous government and is largely credited for strategising BJP’s growth in Assam and the entire northeastern region.

He had previously served as the number two to former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi and has earned plaudits for his efficient management of the Covid-19 crisis in the state.
