Hindu organisation Agniveer has filed a case against Caravan Magazine for publishing an article which analysed the castes of CRPF jawans martyred in Pulwama terror attack.

The article titled, “Urban upper-castes driving Hindutva nationalism have little representation among Pulwama’s slain jawans” created a caste composition of the 40 martyred jawans.

While writing the article, the author Ajaz Ashraf by his own admission “tracked the castes” of the martyred and even spoke to the members of the jawans’ families in their hour of grief to get the information.

The article was heavily panned on social media and was also countered by CRPF which categorically stated that it identifies itself only as an as “Indian organisation”.

Subsequently, the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) cell of Agniveer has filed a complaint against the magazine under the SC, ST Atrocities Act. The complainant in this case is Agniveer’s SC ST cell head Satish Vaid.

The complaint made to the National Commission For Scheduled Caste Chairman accuses the magazine of outraging SC, ST sentiments via irresponsible journalism.

It adds that the article attempted to bring a caste angle to martyred Jawans and called it an insult to their sacrifice. The complaint alleges that the article tries to paint as if the SC community has made less sacrifices in this attack.

It thereby demands that an FIR be filed against the author, publisher under the SC,ST atrocity act and the article be immediately retracted.
