Barely a few months after they got married, an upper caste boy was yesterday (8 April) killed by the Dalit girl’s family as they were opposed to the inter-caste marriage.

The boy, identified as Sonu Singh, was killed just 500 yards from the area’s police station when five persons on two motorcycles shot him in the head. The police arrived as he lay in a pool of blood, but died on the way to the hospital.

The incident occurred in the posh Birhana Road area of Kanpur which is close to the Pheel-Khana police station.

All the accused have been detained according to Anurag Arya, the area’s Police Superintendent (SP). Arya also said that the girl’s uncle, Ashish Sonkar had hired the killers the kill Singh. Sonkar was also among the ones detained.

The police suspects the killing to be a case of honour killing as the couple had tied the knot despite the girl’s family being against it .
