Assistant Professor in the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering at IIT Mandi, Dr G Shrikanth Reddy, has received ‘The International Union of Radio Science (URSI) - Young Scientist Award 2019’ for his significant work in the radio science field, reports India Today.

The prestigious award was presented to him at the 2019 URSI Asia Pacific Radio Science Conference (APRASC-2019), which was organised in New Delhi on 13 March 2019.

Apart from Reddy, 20 other researchers belonging to different parts of the Asia-Pacific Region also received the URSI Young Scientist Award (YSA). The YSA is an award granted to those individuals who are below 35 and have made substantial contributions in the domain of electromagnetic waves and propagation.

"I am honoured to receive this prestigious award. Such awards will motivate young researchers to work in the area of Radio Science and Electromagnetism," stated Reddy.

He also remarked that conferences like the one organised by URSI in New Delhi are important in today’s world as they bridge the connectivity gap between modern technology and society.

The IIT Mandi professor has worked on a number of different projects relating to radio science; during his postdoctoral fellowship at State University New York (Oswego campus) in 2016, he was involved with developing ‘Covert Vehicular Antennas’, while the year after that, he worked on ‘Design of Broadband Frequency Selective Structures (FSS) for Radio Frequency (RF) and Microwave Applications’, which has the potential to be used in communications and stealth technology.
