In his first visit to Amethi after the Lok Sabha elections, Congress’s top leader Rahul Gandhi blamed local leaders for his defeat from the Gandhi family bastion, Times of India has reported.

In one of the most shocking defeats in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi lost by over 52,000 votes to now Union Minister for Human Resource Development Smriti Irani. Irani has been termed as the ‘giant slayer’ for her victory over the then Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Amethi, along with Rae Bareli, was considered as a Gandhi family seat, the oldest political dynasty in India with Rahul being the MP from Amethi since 1999. Gandhi, however, has blamed the local leaders for his defeat.

While appreciating the work done by party workers, Gandhi reportedly criticised the leaders for staying distant from the people. Rahul’s meeting with the workers, however, lasted barely 50 minutes.

Gandhi also announced that he will celebrate reaching 10 million Twitter followers in Amethi.

Gandhi is now an MP from Wayanad in Kerala, having fought on two seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Widely perceived as a ‘safe seat’ Gandhi won the seat defeating the Communist Party of India contender P P Suneer.

"I will not leave Amethi. It is my home and family," said Rahul Gandhi as quoted by a Youth Congress leader. Having had the meeting with the party workers Gandhi left for two villages in the Chhatoh block on the way to Lucknow from where he flew back to New Delhi.
