In India’s Most Backward Mewat, Woman Dies After Being Buried Neck-Deep In Pit To Cure Her Of ‘Evil Spirits’

In a shocking case from Haryana’s backward Mewat region, a woman died after she was reportedly buried neck deep in a pit as a cure for “paranormal” activities. She reportedly kept screaming for help for hours but no one came to her rescue.

The Tribune has reported that the woman has been identified as 30-year-old Prameena. Her husband Sakir, a resident of Palwal’s Bhootpur Udawar village, told the newspaper that his wife was “behaving peculiarly since many days”.

The family took her to a woman named Sahida, who is known in the area for treating “paranormal” patients. Sahida buried Prameena in a five-feet-deep pit. When Prameena died, Sahida blamed the death on the “evil spirits”.

As per a report by Hindi daily Punjab Kesari, the woman died of suffocation and heat.

More shockingly, the police has allegedly not filed a first information report (FIR) in the case yet. Instead, they are waiting for the decision of the village panchayat.

Haryana’s only Muslim-dominated region Mewat (now renamed to Nuh) was recently named the most backward district in India by a Niti Aayog report. The district is just two hours’ drive from national capital New Delhi.
