As large parts of the United States (US) are reeling under unusually cold conditions due to a Polar Vortex from the north, people have taken to social media sites like Twitter to share images of what life has been like in the extreme weather, reports The New Indian Express.

Temperatures at some points in certain locations dropped to as much as below minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately minus 45.55 degrees Celsius). Chicago saw the mercury drop to as much as minus 20 degree Fahrenheit (approximately minus 28 degrees Celsius).

Up to eight lives are already believed to have been lost due to the extreme cold in US Midwest. Forecasters have predicted that areas in the US mainland may see temperatures even lower than in Alaska.

The US space agency NASA has noted that global warming may be behind the unusual weather.

The cold wave has seen many people in the affected areas what life has been like for them in recent days. Here are some pictures from Twitter.
