India Beats China To Win Seat In Prestigious UN Economic And Social Council's Commission On Status Of Women

In a positive development, India has beaten China to be elected as a member of the United Nation (UN)'s Commission on Status of Women which is a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), reports Asian News International (ANI).

Apart from India, Afghanistan and China had contested the election. However, while India and Afghanistan both won the ballots and were elected as members, China could not even secure half of the total number of votes required.

Having won the election, India will be a member of the UN's Commission on Status of Women for a term of four years from 2021 to 2025.

The development was announced by India's permanent representative of India to the UN, T S Tirumurti. He underscored that India winning the election is an endorsement of its commitment to promoting gender equality and women empowerment in all of its endeavours.

It should be noted that while India and Afghanistan secured 38 and 39 votes respectively, China got only 27 votes, one less than 28 votes required to get majority.
