I would be addressing the nation at around 11:45 AM - 12.00 noon with an important message.
Do watch the address on television, radio or social media.
Soon after the Prime Minister posted the tweet, social media became rife with speculation and many recalling his demonetisation address over two years ago.
Some also speculated that the announcement could be related to national security as the Cabinet Committee on Security met earlier in the morning.
Prime Minister Modi’s address was slightly delayed and finally began at 12.24 pm.
He proudly proclaimed India as a space superpower by announcing that the nation’s scientists have successfully tested an anti-satellite missile system in the operation codenamed “Shakti”.
This operation involved the Indian scientists shooting down a lower earth orbit (LEO) satellite using a Made-In-India ASAT missile (Anti-Satellite missile) which shot down the satellite. The operation lasted for just three minutes.
With this, India joins an elite league of three nations namely the US, Russia and China.
During this address, Modi praised DRDO scientists and thanked everyone associated with the operation. He added that space has become a key part of India’s international relations.
Modi also assuaged the world community that the new weapon won’t be used offensively and is only designed for self defence. He also reiterated India’s commitment to peace.
“India should be able to stay ahead of times through technology and stay united to work towards the mission of peace and development”, added PM Modi.
