India Set To Become A Non-Permanent Member Of UNSC For A Year Long Term Starting January 2021

India is set to join the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) next month as a non-permanent member as the council has decided to hold the elections to five non-permanent member seats next month and India is the only contender for the Asia pacific seat, reports Economic Times.

It should be noted that the 193-member strong General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) determined on Friday (29 May) to hold the elections by the use of secret ballots without any plenary being held given the disruptions and compulsions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apart from the elections to the five seats of the UNSC, the UN's General Assembly has also resolved to hold elections of the members to the Economic and Social Council in a similar fashion.

It should be noted that the election will provide India a seat at the high-table of UNSC members for a year long term of 2021-22. India's candidature for the same had gained unanimous support from the 55 members of the Asia Pacific grouping, including China and Pakistan last year in the month of June.

Once elected, India's term will begin in January 2021.
