India Stops Sharing Hydrological Data During Flood Season With Pakistan

Responding to the intense tirade launched against India by Pakistan, former decided to not renew the 1989 agreement for sharing hydrological data of the rivers in the flood season, reports TOI.

India has told the neighbour that it will only provide information on “extraordinary discharges and flood flows”.

The 1989 agreement, a goodwill gesture from India’s side, was renewed every year. But after the heightened tensions post Article 370 abrogation, the agreement wasn’t renewed in the current year.

The decision however, will not affect the Indus Water Treaty (IWT). “India is a responsible nation and committed to the provisions of IWT,” P K Saxena, Indian Commissioner for Indus Waters.

India communicated this to Pakistan on Tuesday (20 August), the same day Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat expressed India’s intent to fully utilise its share of waters under the IWT.
