India will assume the Presidency of the UN Security Council from the beginning of August onward. It will subsequently host signature events concerning the subjects of counterterrorism, security and peacekeeping during the month.

2nd August 2021 will be the first working day for India’s Presidency. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti will carry out a hybrid press briefing in the headquarters of the UN.

The month’s program of work for the Council will be discussed during the briefing.

“It is a singular honour for us to be presiding over the Security Council the same month when we are celebrating our 75th Independence Day,” Tirumurti’s statement through a video message was quoted in a report by The Indian Express.

The upcoming Presidency will be India’s first during its 2021-22 tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The country will next take over the Presidency of the Council in the final month of its two-year tenure in December 2022.

Tirumurti mentioned in the video that India has prioritized maritime security and called upon the Security Council to approach the issue holistically. She also asserted that India would highlight the importance of counterterrorism whilst being at the forefront of the fight against terrorism.
