Indian Railways is making changes to the AC locals plying on the suburban rail network to accommodate more commuters and make the trains more spacious.
In the new train design the power transformers and electrical units have been placed under the coaches as compared to the current practice of placing the equipment in every third coach alongside the passenger seats. These trains hold 15 to 16 people per square meter of a coach.
This plan though will increase its current capacity of 6200 by 10 per cent; the second AC train can add 600 more passengers than the current trains, reports DNA.
The railway management is also considering to change the seating arrangement along the lines of typical metro trains which can considerably increase the capacity by 35 per cent.
Railways though is apprehensive about the train stability when it gets overloaded during peak hours. The trails of the trains will run throughout the monsoon season.
The railways have also installed CCTVs cameras to capture any untoward incident and also to document any derailment or technical failure.
