India’s Fourth-Busiest Station At Mughalsarai Officially Renamed To Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction

A year after the Central government approved the renaming of Mughalsarai Junction in Uttar Pradesh to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction the state government today (5 June) communicated to Governor Ram Naik that it had given its assent to the renaming, reports News18.

Mughalsarai town, located 18 km east of the holy city of Varanasi is the birthplace of the Jan Sangh’s founder Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay.

The proposal to rename the station was mooted by the state government shortly after Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister to revive the legacy of Upadhyay whose body was found under mysterious circumstances on the platform at Mughalsarai railway station in 1968.

The proposal saw heavy disruption by the Opposition who among other things alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was trying to change the map of the country.

Mughalsarai Junction was set up in 1862 by the British administration to build a railway track connecting Delhi to Calcutta. It is located on the Grand Chord Line and is the fourth busiest junction in India.
