India’s Top Woman Tennis Player Ankita Raina Beats Former US Open Champion Sam Stosur In Kunming Open

India’s top seeded woman’s singles tennis player Ankita Raina on Wednesday (24 April) stunned former US Open champion Samantha Stosur in the first round of the Kunming Open in China, Press Trust of India has reported.

Raina defeated the former top Australian seed 7-5 2-6 7-5 in a gruelling match which lasted two hours and fifty minutes. Raina also won the bronze medal in the 2018 Asian games.

The 35-year-old Stosur was Australia’s top women’s singles player for almost nine years from October 2008 to June 2017. She won the US Open in 2011 by defeating Serena Williams and also reached the final of the Australian Open in 2010. Currently ranked 77 in the world, Stosur was ranked fourth in the world in 2011.

Despite the formidable stats of her opponent, Raina refused to get cowered down and took advantage of her opponent’s unforced errors and 14 double faults to seal her victory.

Raina is currently ranked 180 in the world, she would face China’s Kai-Lin Zhang in the second round. This game is expected to be a relative cakewalk for Raina as Zhang is seeded 209 in the world.
