India’s former prime minister Indira Gandhi used to come and meet gangster Karim Lala in Mumbai’s Pydhonie, senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut has claimed.
It may be recalled that Lala - a notorious gangster used to operate extortion rackets and illegal liquor, gambling dens in Mumbai back in the 1980s. He also used to carry out illegal land evictions, kidnappings and contract killings, while also facilitating the drug and counterfeit currency trade.
While speaking at a media event, Raut who used to be a journalist, recalled the days when gangsters used to dominate the Maharashtra capital, Times of India has reported.
He added that when another prominent don Haji Mastan used to come to the Mantralaya, the whole building used to come down to meet him.
He was also reported as boasting about meeting 1993 Mumbai bomb blast mastermind Dawood Ibrahim many times. Raut claimed that he saw and met Dawood on multiple occasions and once even ‘admonished’ him.
“I have seen him, I have met him, I have spoken to him and I have also admonished him”, Raut was quoted as saying.
