In a development marking major diplomatic escalation between Iran and the United Kingdom (UK), the Iranian authorities on Saturday (11 January) arrested the UK's Ambassador to Iran for a brief period, reports Livemint.

The UK has alleged that the arrest of Ambassador Rob Macaire took place without any grounds or explanation. It has also asserted that the arrest marked a significant violation of the international law.

Ambassador Macaire was arrested for allegedly partaking in anti-regime protests in Tehran and for inciting the protestors over the accidental downing of a Ukrainian civilian aircraft by an Iranian missile which led to death of all 176 onboard.

UK has warned Iran that the Persian nation must choose to either continue the march towards becoming a pariah State or to take steps to de-escalate the boiling tensions and engage in diplomatic fashion in the future.
