The newly created Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is set to get its first-ever National Law University (NLU) as Governor Satya Pal Malik yesterday (1 October) gave his nod to the J&K National Law University Bill, clearing the decks for the establishment of the institution, reports Asian News International (ANI).

The move is aimed at bringing J&K at par with other states and Union Territories like Delhi which already have NLUs established in their jurisdictions to ensure access to top-notch law education for the aspiring candidates.

The statement issued by the Governor's office read, "The university will help in disseminating knowledge about law and legal processes and promote legal awareness across different sections of society to achieve political, social and economic justice."

It should be noted that the institution of NLUs across the nation began after a proposal in this respect had been moved during the All India Law Ministers Conference in the mid-90s. The proposal had resolved to institute law schools in each State for ameliorating the quality of professional legal education in the country.
