The only all-weather road, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which links the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, reopened for one-way traffic on Sunday afternoon. The highway was closed since Saturday due to heavy snowfall and landslides.
"The snow clearance operation started at around 5 am on Sunday morning along the Jawahar tunnel and Qazigund and Banihal-Ramban stretch. It took almost nine hours for workers to clear the road for one-way traffic" said Senior Superintendent of Police, Ramban, Anita Sharma, reports News18.
Over 300 Jammu-bound passengers have been rescued from the Kashmir part of the Jawahar tunnel along with the Verinag Zing area, where more than one foot of snow had covered the ground.
The 270-km highway was closed for vehicle traffic on Saturday evening after heavy snowfall in Qazigund-Jawahar tunnel sector along with landslides due to incessant rains. Almost four feet of snow had accumulated on the ground in Peer Ki Gali area over the past couple of days.
