In a bid to attract students from the United States, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) (Advanced) for Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is likely to have an exam centre in San Francisco next year, reports Hindustan Times.

The entrance exam to top engineering institutions in India is conducted by the seven Zonal Coordinating (ZC) IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

According to the director of IIT - Delhi V Ramgopal Rao told the move to be mainly driven by IIT alumni in the US. “There are a lot of Indians in the Bay Area in San Francisco. When one of our delegations visited the US, the Indians there, including IIT alumni, expressed wish to get a chance to let their children study in the IITs. So a decision has been taken to include San Francisco in the list of centres,” Rao said.

He further added, “We are hoping that, apart from the diaspora, other students in the US will also try to join the IITs.”

Indian students are shortlisted for JEE (Advanced) through a screening test in the JEE (Mains). However, foreign students are directly eligible for the second test for the admission to the bachelor course.

The foreign centres for 2019 entrance exam to the prestigious institutions included Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Dubai (UAE), Kathmandu (Nepal) and Singapore.
