In the just concluded year 2020, 225 militants were eliminated in 103 operations across the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), said J&K's Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh, reports Economic Times.

Asserting that the situation had improved in UT with the Police gaining considerable confidence on the ground, DGP Singh said that 2020 saw law and order situation improve in the UT. He shared that the number of terror incidents in J&K had fallen from 584 in 2019 to 143 in 2020.

DGP Singh, however, noted that the local recruitment into militant ranks had witnessed a surge. However, he also added that 70 per cent of such recruits (estimated to be about 167 youths) who joined militancy in 2020 were successfully killed or arrested.

The developments gain significance as 2020 marked the first full year since the abrogation of the contentious Article 370 in the erstwhile state, which was also bifurcated into two separate UTs of J&K and Ladakh in August 2019 by the Parliament.
