A terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district on Friday (24 December), police said.

The security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation at Mumanhal village of the Arwani area in the district after inputs were received about the presence of terrorists there, a police official said.

The search operation turned into an encounter after terrorists opened fire on the security personnel, who retaliated.

During the operation, a terrorist was gunned down by the security forces.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain terrorist is yet to be ascertained.

The search operation is still going on in the area, the police said.

Earlier on Thursday (23 December), acting on specific inputs, the J&K police along with Indian Army's Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF found an IED of around 5 kg assembled in a container planted on Newa Srinagar road.

The bomb disposal squad of J&K police and Army destroyed the IED on the spot and averted a major tragedy.
