In a shocking development, terrorists in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) shot dead a serving police officer identified as Meer Arshad at the point-blank range yesterday (12 September), reports Indian Express.

Arshad was a recent recruit into the J&K Police and was serving his probation in the rank of a Sub-Inspector.

The development took place in the Khanyar neighbourhood of the old Srinagar city and was recorded on the CCTV cameras in the vicinity. The footage showed a militant appearing from behind Arshad and opening fire at him using a pistol.

Following the attack, Arshad was critically wounded and rushed to the Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences where he succumbed to the injuries.

It should be noted that the J&K Police has said that they have identified the terrorists responsible for the attack. The force has said that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

The attack on Arshad and his resultant demise has also evoked condemnation from the mainstream political parties.
