JNU Alumni And Union Ministers S Jaishankar, Nirmala Sitharaman Condemn Violence At University

Former alumni of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), incumbent Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar on Sunday (5 January) night condemned the violence which broke out in the university's campus, reports The Economic Times.

Expressing worry over the situation, External Affairs Minister and revered diplomat Jaishankar said, “Have seen pictures of what is happening in JNU. Condemn the violence unequivocally. This is completely against the tradition and culture of the university.”

Finance Minister Sitharaman also expressed worry and tweeted, "Horrifying images from JNU - The place I know & remember was one for fierce debates and opinions but never violence. I unequivocally condemn the events of the day. This govt, regardless of what has been said the past few weeks, wants universities to be safe spaces for all students."

The Left-ruled JNU Students Union and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) have alleged charges against each other for the violence in the university campus which lasted for more than two hours, leaving several students and teachers injured, and a lot of property damaged.
