Justice Chelameswar Met Left’s D Raja After Attacking CJI In Press Conference

Justice Jasti Chelameswar, one of the four senior Supreme Court judges who attacked the Chief Justice of India (CJI) on the issue of assignment of cases earlier in the day, met Communist Party of India leader and Rajya Sabha member D Raja soon after the press conference, Republic TV has reported.

Raja, talking to the channel, has confirmed that the meeting took place.

"I know Mr Chelameswar from a long time from his days in the south. So when I came to know this, I thought I should find out what exactly is happening, why he's distressed," Raja told the channel.

"I find the four judges have taken an extraordinary step. It shows the deep crisis in the judiciary. This needs to be addressed properly. I think the Parliament, being the supreme body in our democracy, will have to debate this development and will have to suggest some solutions," he added.

Raja said the meeting should not be seen as a political one. He told the channel that he met the judge in his capacity as Member of the Parliament. The left-wing leader said that the Parliament must intervene in the matter.

In a press conference earlier today, Justice Chelameswar had attacked the CJI saying the administration of the apex court is "sometimes not in order" and many "less than desirable things" have taken place. Other sitting judges who participated in the press conference include Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Kurien Joseph, who rank third, fourth and fifth in the order of seniority, respectively.
