Dangal girl from Jammu and Kashmir Zaira Wasim, who gave a sparkling performance in the Aamir Khan-starrer record-breaking movie, took to social media on Monday to post an apology.
After receiving accolades from the film industry and elsewhere, the 16-year-old met Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday, who enquired about her education and interest in other creative fields like acting.
However, the Srinagar-based Zaira was trolled by radical Kashmiri Muslim bigots on social media when photos from the meeting emerged. She took to social media on Monday to apologise for hurting their sentiments. After photos emerged of Zaira with CM Mufti, radical Muslim bigots passed despicable comments about her. Maybe her dress where she wasn’t covered from head to toe troubled Islamists. They also attacked her for indulging in unislamic acts like acting in movies.
As one can see, Islamists are cursing Zaira Wasim to hell, abusing her parents for spoiling Islam in valley.
Without saying what she was sorry for, the actor wrote in her "open confession/apology" that she does not want anyone to follow her footsteps or even consider her as a role model. "I'm not proud of what I'm doing and I want everyone, especially the youth to know that there are real role models out there whether they be in this time or in our history."
That she is a role model is no one’s case, certainly not Wasim’s. But such vile comments inspired by a hateful ideology must have troubled the 16-year old. Many have tried to suggest she was being trolled for meeting the Chief Minister. However, that doesn’t seem to be true and is a typical diversionary tactic by the media to look the other way when a teenager is being harassed by Islamists for not conforming to their standards of dress or culture.
One can only hope that Bollywood celebrities who were going ga ga over Meryl Streep’s speech on Trump will at least speak up for Wasim and against the Islamists of the valley. However, given their track record, we are not holding our breath.
