Kathua rape victim’s family has decided to drop activist-lawyer Deepika Singh Rajawat from representing their side as they were not satisfied with her performance, Greater Kashmir has reported. She was barely available at the court during hearings according to the victim’s father. The family withdrew the power of attorney accorded to the lawyer.

Responding to the news , Deepika Rajawat told The Print that she could not travel all the way to Pathankot everyday. “There are two super senior prosecutors conducting the trial. They have far more experience than I have in handling criminal cases. I had wanted to go to the trial at least once a week, but it is not possible for me to go to Pathankot every day — I have to take care of my daughter. If I travel to Pathankot every day, which is 200 kilometers away”.

The case was heard for 100 times, but the lawyer appeared in Pathankot only twice. Deepika Rajawat who received a lot of media attention for her participation in the case had claimed that she was getting death threats for her work in the case.

The Kathua case involving the rape and murder of a eight year old girl had rocked the entire country. Eight people have been arrested in relation to the case so far. The Supreme Court had earlier transferred the case to Pathankot and ordered day to day hearings.
