The Kerala police has arrested three accused in connection with the kidnapping of a minor nomadic girl hailing from Rajasthan.
The main accused Muhammad Roshan who is the son of a local Communist Party of India (CPI) leader is still at large, New Indian Express has reported.
The 14-year-old victim who is the daughter of a nomadic couple was kidnapped from the town of Oachira on Monday night (18 March). The four accused reportedly barged into the couple’s house, assaulted them and then kidnapped the daughter.
As per the station in-charge at the Oachira police station, the accused has taken the girl out of the state, possibly to Bengaluru. The police are finding it difficult to trace him after he switched off his mobile phone.
The victims parents have alleged that the local police had turned a blind eye to earlier reports of the girl being subjected to sexual harassment. Instead of taking action against the culprits the police allegedly asked the parents to dress the victim as a boy.
The police has countered this by claiming that the victim “willingly eloped” with the main accused about a year ago but was successfully made to return back.
The state’s human rights commission and the Women’s Commission has taken suo-moto cognisance of the matter and demanded action against the accused.
