‘Kingslayer’ Smriti Irani who defeated Congress president Rahul Gandhi in his bastion Amethi in the Lok Sabha polls 2019, has been awarded with twin portfolios of Ministry of Women and Child Development as well as Ministry of Textiles.

Forty-three year old Irani has served various portfolios earlier. She became the youngest cabinet minister in 2014, heading the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. Later, she also took charge of the ministry for textiles and the Information and Broadcasting ministry.

Eldest of the three daughters of a Bengali mother and a Maharashtrian father, Irani was involved with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since her childhood and her mother was a member of Jana Sangh.

After a spectacular career in television, being “TV’s favourite bahu”, Irani started her political career as she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2003 and became the vice-president of the Maharashtra Youth Wing in 2004.

Irani is dubbed as the face of strong female politicians in India. After the murder of her aide in Amethi recently, she gave a shoulder to his mortal remains, and vowed to secure death penalty for the culprits.
