Editor of online web and video portal Lallantop apologised on Thursday (9 January) for tweeting an offensive meme advocating condom use among BJP supporters so that people like them would no longer be born in the world anymore.

Here is the tweet by the Lallantop editor Saurabh Dwivedi, which he deleted after facing an online backlash.

In the tweet, besides sharing the meme which seeks an extinction of BJP supporters, Dwivedi also mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi by calling for the meme to go viral by using the latter customary Mitron (friends) phrase.

This meme soon resulted in a heavy criticism of Dwivedi, with social media users also criticising the India Today group which owns the portal.

Following the outrage Dwivedi entered damage control mode and posted a series of tweets to apologise for his post.

In his message Dwivedi acknowledged that the content and tone of his “sarcastic message” was unequivocally wrong and while it was done with an intention to “humour” people, it misfired,

He added that the Editorial policy of Lallantop is against any sort of bias asked and the team made a mistake in this regards. He also issued an “unconditional apology” at the end of his message.
