In response to Amartya Sen’s call for an alliance of secular parties to defeat Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh has said that intellectuals like Sen have always misled people, The Economic Times has reported. Sen had also asked left parties to join an anti-BJP alliance as “democracy is in danger”.

"What happened in 2014 polls? A party having got 55 per cent seats but having secured 31 per cent of the total votes, came to power... A party with ill motives,” Amartya Sen had said in response to a question-answer session Bharat Kon Pathe (Where is India heading?).

“Intellectuals like Sen, who had always professed the Left ideology, are losing touch with reality. Sen had said CPI(M) is getting invisible. Nothing can be truer than the fact that people like Sen, a Marxist, have little relevance in the present times”, Ghosh said on the sidelines of a party programme.

In response to Ghosh’s remark, Partha Chatterjee of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has said that one has to be “a reader of books” to comment on Amartya Sen. Chatterjee said that those who wield ‘lathis’ should not comment on erudite people like Amartya Sen.
