The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Friday (8 February) approved the creation of a separate division for Ladakh, thereby fulfilling a long-standing demand of the region’s residents, Press Trust of India has reported.
“The issue has been discussed at various fora and there has been a persistent demand for the creation of a division for Ladakh from many organisations, including the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDC) Leh and Kargil”, said the order.
Till now Ladakh was part of the Kashmir division. This now takes up the number of divisions in the state to three - Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
Following this move, the region would have its own Inspector General of Police, a divisional commissioner and separate administration and revenue divisions.
In order the fill the required administrative posts, a committee would be constituted under the chairmanship of Planning, Development and Monitoring Department’s Principal Secretary.
The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti has welcomed this decision.
Incidentally, demands have also been made for Ladakh to get complete autonomy from the Kashmiri setup.
