Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus has begun to export devices manufactured in India to markets abroad, including Western countries such as the US, reports The Economic Times.

The company is already the leader in the Indian premium smartphone market, controlling a 43 per cent share in the category.

“2019 is our best year so far (in India)…As Indian infrastructure matures and ecosystem for manufacturing builds out, there is definitely a possibility to keep investing here,” said co-founder of OnePlus Carl Pei.

According to the co-founder, the company will even considering making India its manufacturing hub, if the country meets the cost-competitiveness and quality goals it has in mind. Experts believe that the ongoing US-China trade conflict may have also persuaded the company to look for an alternative channel for its exports.

OnePlus also wants to capitalise on its present user base by foraying into services, a strategy perfected by Apple.

“We might be going into the services space and might be announcing more services and features. If we don’t try, we will never know… we are looking at a lot of areas,” Pei said.
