The ex-President of Maldives, Abdulla Yameen who is currently under investigation for corruption, has $6.5 million frozen from his accounts after a court order, as per reports by The Tribune.
There are speculations that Yameen received $1.5 million as illegal payments during his failed bid for re-elections in Maldives. The police questioned Abdulla on Saturday. A police complaint was lodged by the Maldives’ monetary authority, in which it claims reported donations that were made into Yameen’s private account in two suspicious tranches.
Abdulla is notoriously known for his iron-fist dealing rule where he jailed or exiled his opponents. The former President is believed to have relied on China for political and economic support. However, the new President Mohamed Solih has accused China of a land grab in the Maldives and has turned to New Delhi for help.
The incumbent President, in his first official visit abroad after assuming office, arrived in New Delhi on 16 December (Sunday) to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17 December (Monday).
