Babul Supriyo, BJP MP from Asansol who switched over to the TMC last week, has expressed that West Bengal (WB) Chief Minister (CM) Mamata Banerjee can be a frontrunner to become the Prime Minister (PM) following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
“I want that the captain of our party Mamata Banerjee becomes the Prime Minister in 2024. Opposition plays an important role in a democratic system,” Supriyo, a playback singer in the Hindi film industry too, was quoted by the ANI.
He added, “Nobody can deny the fact that Mamata Banerjee is among the top frontrunners for the prime ministerial post.”
It needs to be noted that Supriyo held a place in PM Narendra Modi’s union council of ministers for almost seven years since 2014. He contested the 2021 West Bengal assembly polls from the Tollygunge constituency but was defeated soundly.
Back in July, he was dropped from his ministerial post following the mega reshuffle of PM Modi’s cabinet. Soon after, Supriyo announced his retirement from politics, only to join the TMC in presence of CM Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien.
“I left politics wholeheartedly and I am accepting the opportunity wholeheartedly,” the Lok Sabha MP was quoted by the ANI.
