The decision of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to nominate Ram Nath Kovind, Governor of Bihar and a Dalit to the the highest post in the country has not gone down well with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati it seems.
Addressing the media after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah made the announcement, she showed some jitters while expressing her opinion.
As he is a Dalit we are positive on his name, but only if oppn doesn't announce a popular dalit name: Mayawati #RamNathKovind pic.twitter.com/QeRlVEz2FF

Mayawati first said that she was positive about a Dalit name being propped up, but clarified that the opposition should have nominated a “popular Dalit” name.
She further went on to say that it would have been better if the NDA had announced a ‘non-political Dalit’ as their nominee.
We are also of the opinion that it would have been better if NDA had named some non political Dalit person as President nominee:Mayawati
