According to expenditure reports submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Mayawati’s BSP has the biggest bank balance among all the parties functioning in the country, reports Economic Times (ET).
Bahujan Samaj Party, India’s third largest national party, has noted in its filings that it has Rs 669 crore deposited in eight accounts in branches of public sector banks (PSBs) in Delhi-NCR.
The party has also declared Rs 95.54 lakh as cash in hand. Following BSP in the list is the Uttar Pradesh-based Samajwadi Party (SP) which takes the second slot with Rs 471 crore in its bank accounts.
The third spot is occupied by India’s second largest party Congress with a bank balance of Rs 196 crore. However, it should be noted these numbers for the party are based on the details submitted by it to the EC on 2 November (2018). Details about the party’s reserves after it won the state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh are yet to reach the public domain.
Even TDP Has A Larger Bank Balance
BJP, which is the world’s largest political party by membership and also the ruling party at the centre and in several states, came in at the fifth position with a bank balance of Rs 82 crore. It was superseded by another regional player Telugu Desam Party (TDP) which had Rs 107 crores in its bank accounts.
One of the plausible explanations for BJP’s low rank can be attributed to its high expenditure. In its report to ECI, the party has stated that it spent Rs 758 crore — the largest expenditure by any party — out of the Rs 1,027 crore it had raised in 2017-18.
