Luxury car brand Mercedes Benz yesterday (3 November) began the local assembly of GLC 43, which is the first from its high-performance AMG line-up of cars to be put together in India. With this, Mercedes Benz now locally assembles 11 of its cars in India, reports Economic Times.

Earlier, the company used to import the entirely built-up car units to be sold in India. However, 11 cars of the brand are now imported in kits and assembled here as the company looks to benefit from the savings driven by the lower import duties on kits than entirely built-up units.

The company has a facility in Maharashtra's Pune where it has a capacity to produce 20,000 end-cars annually. This is the highest production capacity for any luxury car maker in India. It has also made an additional investment of around Rs 400 crore to boost the local production capability.

Meanwhile, even as the company is continuing to assemble more of its offered cars in India, it is still importing completely built-up units for a few models like V-Class, V-Class Elite, CLS, C-Class Cabriolet and the S-600 Grand.

The locally assembled offerings from Mercedes Benz meanwhile include Mayback S 560, S-Class, E-Class Long Wheelbase, C-Class and the GLA, GLC, long-wheelbase GLE, G350d SUVs and GLC Coupé and AMG portfolio.
