Football superstar Lionel Messi has dropped a bombshell on his club Barcelona FC by triggering a clause in his contract which allows him to leave for free at the end of the season.

As per a report by Associated Press, Barcelona has confirmed that it received a document from Messi which references to a clause in his contract which allows the player to leave for free at the end of every season - provided he informs the club before 31 May.

This deadline is now up for dispute due to the unprecedented delay in completing the football season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Barcelona has hinted that it may take up the matter legally.

Messi who is widely considered to be the greatest football player of all time, has reportedly grown unhappy at Barcelona in recent years, especially after the club's poor performance which ended in a 8-2 Champions League drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Messi has scored a whopping 643 goals for Barcelona and provided 285 assists in 731 games, to win 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns. He has also won the Ballon d'Or six times - the most for any player.

The 33-year-old Messi will not have any dearth of suitors if his move away from Barcelona materialises.
