Tearing into the wounds of China, the United States (US) Secretary of State Michael Pompeo Sunday (3 May) said that enormous evidence existed to show that the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began in a laboratory in Wuhan of China's Hubei province, reports Livemint.

“I can tell you that there is a significant amount of evidence that this came from that laboratory in Wuhan,” Pompeo said on ABC’s ‘This Week’.

Emphasising that China had refused to give international scientists access to learn what had happened in Wuhan, Pompeo asserted, “These are not the first times that we have had a world exposed to viruses as a result of failures in a Chinese lab.”

Going harsh with his words against China and the World Health Organisation (WHO), Pompeo pressed, “China behaved like authoritarian regimes do, attempted to conceal and hide and confuse. It employed the WHO as a tool to do the same.”

Pompeo also said that China continues to deny access to health experts from the WHO and the US-based scientists from collecting samples of the virus needed for the study.

With the total number of casualties in the US having passed a toll of more than 68,000, the US has been going hard in criticism of China over its handling of the pandemic.
