The Madhya Pradesh police on Thursday (1 August) decided to take suo moto action against Zomato user Amit Shukla who declined to accept an order as it was being delivered by a Muslim delivery boy, OpIndia reported.
This act by Shukla led to a “Food Has No Religion” PR campaign by Zomato which in-turn sparked a debate over Zomato prominently listing Halal meat on its portal while at the same time not doing anything similar for Jhatka meat.
Many argued that while Zomato on one hand was promoting the “secular” nature of food, it on the other hand was going the extra mile to assist customers who were wrongly delivered non-Halal dishes.
As per the OpIndia report, the Jabalpur police has decided to step into the matter and despite no complaint being filed against Shukla. The police has issued a notice to Shukla as a preventive measure. Hence if he tweets or retweets “communally sensitive posts”, during a prescribed period, he will be sent to jail.
The Jabalpur police SP argues that this measure was necessary as the tweet could “inflame communal passions and hurt religious sentiments”.
