The meeting between transport unions and the management of Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) management didn’t meet any ends as the talks failed to form a resolution to the ongoing strike called by the employees. The meeting was chaired by Maharashtra’s chief secretary on Saturday, January 12.
The Bombay High Court had asked the union members to meet the committee headed by chief secretary D K Jain, BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta, BEST general manager Surendrakumar Bagde, secretaries of the transport and urban development departments, to end the ongoing strike and come up with solutions to the crisis.
Since Tuesday, 8 January, more than 32,000 employees have gone on strike, putting 3,200 buses off the roads. causing huge inconvenience to the commuters.
The Indian Express quoted BEST Workers’ Union president, Shankar Rao, as saying, “We put our stand before them and very clearly stated that we will not withdraw the strike until our demands are accepted.”
On Monday, a report will be submitted by the chief secretary to the Bombay High Court on the matter.
