Nanavati-Mehta Commission Report Gives Clean Chit To Erstwhile CM Modi Led Government In 2002 Post-Godhra Riots

The Nanavati-Mehta Commission report on the 2002 Gujarat riots, that took place after burning of over 50 Karsewaks in a train at Godhra station, has been tabled in the state Assembly.

The report says that the riots in the aftermath of the tragic train burning incident were not organised. The report has also given a clean chit to the state government headed by the then chief minister Narendra Modi, reports ANI.

Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja tabled the report in the House, five years after it was submitted to the then state government. Retired Justices G T Nanavati and Akshay Mehta had in 2014 submitted their final report on the 2002 riots to the then state chief minister Anandiben Patel, reports News18.

The commission was appointed in 2002 by the then state chief minister Narendra Modi to probe the riots.

Over 1,000 people were killed in the riots that followed after the burning of two coaches of the Sabarmati Express train near Godhra railway station, in which 59 Karsewaks were killed.
