The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested absconding Khalistani terrorist Gurjeet Singh Nijjar from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.

The anti-terror probe agency said that Nijjar was hiding in Cyprus, Europe, and was arrested upon his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the National Capital on Tuesday (22 December) night.

Nijjar was arrested for hatching a criminal conspiracy to revive Sikh militancy in India for ultimate aim of formation of a separate state of Khalistan.

The NIA had registered a case on 10 January last year against Nijjar and another accused Harpal Singh under Section 3 and 25 of the Arms Act, 1959; Sections 37 and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951 and Section 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, reports Hindustan Times.

Further probe by the agency revealed that Nijjar, Harpal and another accused Moin Khan were active on social media platforms and hatched a criminal conspiracy to revive Sikh militancy for ultimate aim of formation of a separate state of Khalistan.

Through social media, the trio used to post videos and images of Operation Blue Star and Jagtar Singh Hawara, a convict in the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.

"Pro-Khalistani posts related to proscribed organisation Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) with sole intention to motivate likeminded Sikh youths and others to join the Khalistan “movement”," the agency said.

The agency had earlier filed a chargesheet against the three of them in a special NIA court on 23 May 2019.

NIA further said that Nijjar will be produced in a special court for his transit custody and will thereafter be taken to Mumbai for further investigation.
